COMMUNION and SWINE FLU:
various churches, and the government, have issued advice. The most
obvious is, if you are ill, stay at home.
For the full script, see the Church in Wales website and links, but briefly:
· the priest will use alcohol gel hand cleaner after the Peace
· when flu is “around”, you may if you choose receive bread and not wine, and have “full” communion in this way
· bread will be given without touching communicant hands
· intinction (“dipping”) is not recommended: “Studies have suggested that intinction may in fact present a greater risk factor than the common cup. Fingers generally carry a higher level of contamination than lips, so consecrated bread handled by an infected person and
then dipped into a common cup will carry a risk of contaminating the consecrated wine. Similarly fingers may dip into the consecrated wine.”
· otherwise we shall continue as usual, trusting the alcohol in the wine
to disinfect in the same way as alcohol in hand cleaner. I am not aware
of ever having caught an infection in this way.
