CHANGE
Imagine: As you stand at the pearly gates, hoping to get into heaven, you realise that they don’t open! Instead
there are small holes to crawl through – but much too small for you! A gnome sitting to one side offers
to change you into a rabbit, and you see another person changed and hopping into glory .Do you
accept the change?
A Bible Passage: John 3:1-
Mk 1:16-
Some questions:
1. We all find change difficult, even good changes of our own choice! Discuss the most important, and most
difficult, changes in your life. What made change difficult, or easier? Was not changing possible?
2. In the Eucharist, what sort of change do we ask for in the first prayer we say together? the confession?
Intercession? prayer after communion?
3. Nicodemus (John 3) has lived as a Jew, and found security and satisfaction in that life, but comes
respectfully to Jesus. Why do you think Jesus immediately talks to him about change (3:3)? Is it really
necessary for Nicodemus? Was it necessary for other people? What changed?
4. You could say that the whole New Testament is a story of change – fishermen become disciples, the sick
become well,
Christians experience the Holy Spirit, miracles, persecution, mission .. Does it ever stop? Can the Church
today relax its efforts to share the good news of Jesus in ways people can hear?
5. What can we do for people who want an “unchanging” Church to hold onto for security?
6. Nicodemus made the change! (John 19:39) How can we help others to make necessary changes, and avoid
unnecessary ones?
