MONEY

Imagine:  The Church Treasurer has a nightmare..  The Angel Gabriel arrives to audit the Church finances,

but instead of seeing if the books add up, keeps asking about how the money is raised and what it

is used for.  How would your Church come out of that sort of audit?

    A Bible Passage:  Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Tim 6:10, Heb 13:5, Matthew 6:24

   Some questions:

   1. Why are people so obsessed with money and the making of money?  Have church-people escaped this

        fashion?

       What effects does it have?

   2. “Nowhere can we find the food for which our souls cry out, but here, Lord, at your table.” (prayer before the

         Peace)

        True? – how?

   3. How do you feel about the unequal amounts given to different servants (Mt 25:14,15) ?  Is this realistic in

       your experience?

   4. The slaves trade with wealth not their own.  What do you have “on loan”?  What do you think of as yours by

       right?

(Does looking at Luke 12:16-21 change the way you want to answer?)

   5. The Master seems to see the money and trading as a training or test for something else; is this your

attitude?  The Master seems less concerned with the profit than the process; discuss this attitude.

   6. The slave given just one talent is treated harshly (v24-30).  Why is this?  What has the slave failed to

        understand?  What do you learn?

   7.  An atheist investment banker says to you, “So what difference does Christian faith make to the way you

        handle money?”  Answer?

   Further resources:

The Diocesan Stewardship group would help you think about raising, accounting for, and spending Church

money. Ethical investment is becoming more and more popular and is available for individuals and groups.

Ask someone to speak to your Church or group about it.
