MISSION and MAINTENANCE
Have you thought of doing a skills and talents audit, to see what people in your congregation would be happy to
do?.
Imagine: A new couple move into your area, and wonder whether your congregation is the one they want to
join. They ask lots of questions about what you actually do, and who is involved in doing it. What sort
of answers do they get?
Would you want new members who didn’t “fit in” with everything you do and the way that you do it?
A Bible Passage: Luke 9:57-
Also Luke 5:37-
1-
Some questions:
1. “We offer ourselves to you as a living Sacrifice” (prayer after Communion).. Which words of the Eucharist do
you find demanding?
2 (Lk 9:57) Why is Jesus so discouraging to someone who says he wants to follow him? Does our Church
discourage people in the right way? Does it discourage people in the wrong way? How?
3. (Lk 9:59,60) What is so important about proclaiming the Kingdom of God? Is this true now, here? Was the
talk
about “burying” a distraction, or a conflicting loyalty, or what? What would be the equivalent thing getting in
the way of your serving God now?
4. (Lk 9:61,62) There are lots of things we want to do, and many will never get to the top of the list. What is
most important to your Church now? What is most urgent? (are they the same? Should they be?)
5. What Maintenance does your Church have to do? (Building renovation? Health and Safety? Child
Protection?..).
What Mission does your Church have to do? (Helping people find faith? Young people? Outsiders? Particular
groups in your community?). Which is more important? Easier? More popular? The one you feel equipped to
do?
So, what are you going to do about it?
