LAST WORD                        PENTECOST 14        SUNDAY 17th. AUGUST 2008

One of the opportunities of being on holiday is sharing the worship of a different place and congregation.  Last week, I found myself in a village church for Morning Prayer, taken by a local Reader.  The congregation was welcoming, the service well led and appropriate, the sermon interesting and thoughtful.  That was all good.  Sadder was the fact that Gill and I were possibly the youngest present (though it was a non-eucharistic service at 11am).  Overall, with coffee and homemade cake to finish, and hopeful enquiries about whether we might be living near, we felt valued.

That evening, having joined the bellringers a few hundred yards from our caravan site (behind the local pub) for practice the previous Wednesday, I went to the nearest Church, rang for service and stayed.  This time it was Evensong (yes, 1662 and the original Psalter!), carefully and well taken by a lady OLM.  (Ordained Local Minister – we don’t have them in Wales, or very few and not in this diocese).  I wondered what would happen at the Intercession, but after another thoughtful sermon, prayers were led by the Organist.  (Rather as we have Intercessions led at the 9.30 and 11).  He drew together themes from the service, and from the week’s news, and helped us to turn them into thanksgiving and petition in an unhurried and helpful way.

I enjoyed my Sunday off (without a dog collar).  I found the company helpful, and the services good.  I wish some of the people had been younger – in other places we have found young congregations.  I hope they were encouraged by the presence of visitors.  Do join in when you go away – and give a welcome to those who come to us, even for just a week, or two!
